What is a BTTS tip?

Both Teams To Score – usually shortened to BTTS – asks one simple question: will each side score at least one goal? A BTTS “yes” tip wins if the match ends 1–1, 2–1, 3–2 or any other score where both teams are on the scoresheet. It loses if either team fails to score, so 0–0, 1–0 and 3–0 are all losing results. Who wins the match doesn’t matter at all, which is why BTTS is popular with people who find it hard to call a result.

2–1Both scored – tip wins
1–1Both scored – tip wins
2–0One side blank – tip loses

Goals normally count in the 90 minutes plus stoppage time only. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs are usually excluded, and own goals count for the team they are credited to. Rules for abandoned or postponed matches vary, so always check your bookmaker’s terms.

What makes a good BTTS match?

Our BTTS tips come from statistical analysis rather than gut feel. The kind of things that point towards both teams scoring include two sides that score regularly but also concede regularly, attacking home and away records, and leagues where open, end-to-end games are common. Things that point the other way include a team that keeps lots of clean sheets, a side that rarely scores away from home, or a big mismatch in quality where the stronger team may simply shut the game down.

Context matters too. A team that needs a result late in the season, a weakened line-up or a cup tie with rotated squads can all change how open a game is likely to be. We list the match, the league and the kick-off time so you can add your own knowledge on top.

How to read the stars

Every BTTS tip in Sports Tips Star carries a star rating. In the app, free users see a selection of BTTS tips as 4★ each day – up to two per date, and they are the ones listed on this page. 5★ tips are our highest-rated BTTS picks and are unlocked with Premium. The stars tell you how strongly we rate a pick compared with others that day; they are not a promise that it will win. The Accuracy page in the app shows how BTTS tips at each star level have performed, so you can judge for yourself.

Using BTTS tips sensibly

  • Read the fixture, not just the tip – check team news if you can.
  • Avoid stacking lots of BTTS picks together; every extra selection adds risk.
  • Set a budget before you start and never chase losses.

Does BTTS include extra time?

Usually not. Most bookmakers settle Both Teams To Score on the 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so goals in extra time or penalty shoot-outs don’t count. Check your bookmaker’s rules.

Do own goals count for BTTS?

Yes. An own goal counts for the team it is credited to, so it can complete a BTTS result.
